23 Albums for Summer Vacations

Riding in the car with a mixed group of generations can be frustrating when no one agrees on the music. Here are choices from a wide range of genres that evoke the summer vacation driving spirit.

For some, the need for something like a list of top ten albums for summer vacations is an absolute emergency. However, when you are planning a family vacation, you do not want everyone in the car fighting over what to listen to. Some radio stations are simply playing pop music recycled over and over again. As we all know, if you don't listen to something new and stimulating, it can often make you feel tired while you're driving. It can also be difficult to find something that every generation will want to listen to.

While this article does not promise to fulfill the every need of every music listener, it will help you to
accomplish one goal. That goal is to have fun listening to and reviewing new music. Even if your family does not like all of the music, they can surely have a good time discussing why they don't like it on those long vacation drives. Included are the top albums for summer vacations and a long list of honorable mentions.

Do You Need To Spend Money For Summer Albums?

One of the wonderful things about the modern age is that there are lots of free songs out there. For example, one summer favorite in Louisville, KY is CRASHDDZ's "Summer is Over". Also available on sites like SoundCloud.com are full mixes by DJ's such as Chicago's Matt FutureKill Murphree's "Summer Promo". Not only can you preview and download these songs for free, but you can also buy other work by these artists by following their links. Other ideas are podcasts like Chances With Wolves on East Village Radio (my personal favorite is Episode #77 with Talib Kweli).

1. CRASHDDZ's "Summer is Over"
2. Matt FutureKill Murphree "Summer Promo 2011"

Newly Released Albums for Summer Vacations

Fortunately, summer is all about rocking out. For this reason, you will need a steady diet of rock, punk, and indie to make it through the heat and humidity of a long summer vacation drive. Thankfully, three albums released in the past few months are making the stifling humidity bearable.

3. Jello Biafra and the Guantanamo School of Medicine (Biafra is a member of the former Dead Kennedy's) - "Enhanced Methods of Questioning"
4. My Morning Jacket - "Circuital"
5. Foxy Shazam (self titled)

Electro-Indie Rock With A Summer Vacation Car Driving Theme

When you are out on the road, it can be next to impossible to get the music right. When everyone is complaining that the other music you are playing is too loud or distracting, it is nice to have a few records you can always fall back on. The music listed below is modern, has a lot of harmony, and everyone can understand all the lyrics.

They are also great albums for soothing weary passengers that may need to get in a good nap. However, they are interesting enough to allow drivers to keep from falling asleep behind the wheel.

6. Josh Ritter - The Animal Years
7. AIR- Moon Safari
8. Yo La Tengo - Summer Sun
9. Neutral Milk Hotel - In the Aeroplane Over the Sea
10. Sufjan Stevens - Illinois
