I was inspired to write a sestina poem when I discovered it was related to the French tradition of the Troubadours. Immediately, I thought of my two friends that are the duo that forms The Troubadours of Divine Bliss. Located near Louisville, Kentucky, these ladies definitely leave an impression that there is still a lot of poetic beauty to be explored in the English language.
In order to get a grip on this difficult structure, I found an online article that explained that this was all about six words and mixing them up seven different times. Each poem has seven stanzas and, once you figure out the structure, they are really not that difficult to write.
I also learned about the prominent Arnaut Daniel, the inventor of the sestina, and read some of the great sestina poems of the past 1000 years. Included were authors such as Rudyard Kipling, Elizabeth Bishop, and Ezra Pound. With names like these, I had to at least give the sestina a fair try.
Sestina Formula
For my sestina, I picked 6 words for my poem. They were:
Stanza 1: ABCDEF
A Troubadours
B Divine
C Bliss
D Adventure
E Music
F Heart
The sestina formula that has been used since 1100 is:
Stanza 1: ABCDEF
Stanza 2: FAEBDC
Stanza 3: CFDABE
Stanza 4: ECBFAD
Stanza 5: DEACFB
Stanza 6: BDFECA
Stanza 7, Line 1: BE
Stanza 7, Line 2: DC
Stanza 7, Line 3: FA
Stanza 1 Sestina to the Troubadours of Divine Bliss
In order to understand this poem structure, here is the six words I chose and their usage in each line of stanza one.
Who are the true troubadours of the world these days?
These divine creatures that decided not to be trobairitz,
An old bliss of middle -aged France,
This adventure duo made their pittance,
And their music spun of eloquence,
To make the heart flutter and dance.
